A species of Alaskan frog freezes solid during the winter, then thaws out during the spring and comes back to life, hopping away into the forest good as new. Related classroom curriculum ideas:

*Freeze a bunch of small toy frogs (or other animals/insects) inside ice cube trays and then set them out inside your sensory tub. Have the kids play as they defrost and come back to life!

The arctic regions weren't always so cold. They were once dense forests and expansive grasslands. Paleontologists say that Hippos and rhinos thrived north of the Arctic Circle around 53 million years ago. They say that fossils found on Canada's Ellesmere Island show that the furry mammals lived amid lush swamps during an era when the climate was warmer worldwide. Temperatures then ranged from70 degrees Fahrenheit to just above freezing.

* Antarctica is actually a desert, receiving about the same amount of precipitation - Less than 2 inches a year - as the Sahara. Just a very cold, freezing desert.

* Antarctica is one-and-a-half times the size of the United States...much bigger than most people think.

* The coldest temperature ever recorded was -129 F in Antarctica on July 21, 1983.

* In the 1770s, the famous explorer Captain James Cook was the first person to sail into Antarctic waters.
