Fun facts about hummingbirds:
* Some species of hummingbirds are the tiniest birds on the planet *There are about 320 species of hummingbirds, and all of them live in North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
* They are the only type of birds that can fly backward as well as forwards.
* They can flap their wings between 22 and 72 times a second.
* Food is very important to hummingbirds. They consume more than twice their body weight in nectar and insects every day.
* In Captivity, hummingbirds live as long as dogs ... about 9 to 14 years.
* As fast as they are small, hummingbirds fly steadily at 29 miles per hour with no assistance from the wind.

Hummingbirds: The Stealth Fighter Jet of the bird World
For their size, hummingbirds can fly faster than a fighter jet. A hummingbird's speed can reach 385 body lengths per second, easily beating the peregrine falcons recorded dives of 200 body lengths per second. ~ fighter jet with its afterburners on reaches 150 body lengths per second, while a space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere hits 207 body lengths per second. Hummingbirds can swoop down and turn so fast that they experience forces more than nine G's; or 9 times the force of gravity. For short periods, the birds fold their wings and hit speeds up to 27.3 meters per second (61 miles per hours).
