Gather several large flat box along with smaller round rocks the size of a baseball that kids can hold in their hands. (River rocks work well.) Go to your local grocery store and get some whole grain wheat, corn, or other grains . Set the different items out in bowls at your table. Have the kids take a pinch of the grain, place it on the rock, and use the other rock to try and grind it up with a rolling motion. Use this activity to talk about how Native Americans did this to make flour for bread. Later, in group, invite the kids to share their experiences mashing the grain, and tell you about what problems or experiences they think Native Americans would have had.
