Cut butcher paper into sections about 1 foot by 3 feet. Use black paper or spray paint it black for this activity. Provide the children with colored tempera school paint, tooth brushes, and fine tipped paint brushes. Tape the paper onto a wall. Have the kids dip the tooth brush in paint, then stand back a foot or so from the paper and rake their fingers across the bristle to splatter little flecks of paint onto their picture for stars. After they have their galaxy all speckled, have them use the paint brushes to add planets, spaceships, or other cosmic items. You may want to consider doing this activity outside, as it can get messy. Either way, kids will love it, and it creates some very interesting paintings.
