Collect 4 or 5 shoe boxes, and fill each one with play money, a few real coins, a piece of scrap paper, and a pencil. Divide the kids into groups and give each one a shoe box. Have them sort and count the money, writing the total amount on the piece of paper. When done, dole out the money differently and do it again, or have the kids switch shoe boxes and count the other groups shoe box to verify their findings. Make a game of it by hiding the shoe boxes around the room or having kids try to pick the shoe box with the most money in it.
