Assemble a prop box with miscellaneous items in it. Set the box out for them at a table, along with paper and writing utensils. Let them explore the box, instructing them to think of creative uses for the items. For example, a prop box might include string, a few empty 2 liter bottles, a couple boards or wood dowels, and a large piece of cloth. Or maybe one with toothpicks, some pieces of Styrofoam, fishing line, and electrical wire. The possibilities are endless, and so are the ideas kids will come with for what to do with the items. Have them brainstorm for everything from structures they could make to tools the item could be used for, to crazy inventions they think up. This project does wonders for cognitive ability, and if you do a good job getting them interested, they will love it as well. You'll also find that many other classroom projects can spring from this activity. If they come up with cool things to make with the items, revisit it later and let them make the items they thought of. Theme: Cognitive
