Painting the Trees
Find a tree with rather smooth bark that looks like it could use a little color. Then have the kids paint it. You can use either non-toxic washables tempera paint, or for a slightly less messy version, soak sidewalk chalk in water for a couple of hours to soften it, then have the kids rub the chalk over the bark or use a large paintbrush with water, and then smooth and blend the hues. This makes for a fun project to do on your nature trip, especially if you can find smaller trees with low lying branches to paint in the early spring or the late fall. Or just head out to your back yard.
