Eating the sun
Light from the sun is delivered to earth in the form of 4 protons. It hits the leaf, and it splits water into oxygen and hydrogen. Since the plant makes twice as much hydrogen as it does oxygen, it stores that excess as a solid fuel inside the plant. Then you eat that plant, and you get all the sunlight back out that the plant stored as energy. In essence, it's like you're eating the sun! So be sure to eat lots of sunlight by eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Doesn't the sun taste good? !

Head Hunters

Lost your head? No problem: When some types of worms lose their head, say, because a hungry predator bites it off, it will simply grow another one. Don't you wish you had this trick? Flatworms known as planarians are the masters of this feat. If you cut off a planarian's head, the worm re-grows a new head. Cut off the tail and it re-grows a tail. Chop it into 279 bits, and it will re-grow into 279 entirely new worms.

Looking closely at a leaf
Have you ever looked real closely at a leaf? If you do, you'll notice an intricate pattern of leaf veins. Like blood vessels in the human body, you'll see one main vein going up the leaf, several veins splitting off from it to the side; and if you look real closely you'll notice a lattice-work of even smaller veins springing off from those. These veins form a network that moves water and other nutrients to the various parts of the plant. This forms an efficient patchwork of veins, often times in loops, that helps plants circumvent damaged areas to channel nutrients to the parts that need them.

Related curriculum: Collect leaves on a nature walk and bring them back to the classroom. Compare the different vein patterns under a magnifying glass or microscope. Have the kids draw what they see. (Science/fine motor)
