Clip out assorted articles from newspapers or magazines, and assemble them in a pile on the table. Provide each child with a highlighter or a marker, and have them go through the article and circle or highlight all the site word they can find, such as “the” “and” “so” “at” and so on. You can have them do this from memory, or provide them with note cards with the different words written on them.
Once they have found all they can find in that article, have them count the number of and write it at the top. For added incentive, you might let them trade each found word for a small treat, such as an M&M or a Skittle.
